Porlamar, Isla de Margarita, Venezuela. Castries, St. Lucia. Like much of the Caribbean, Saint Lucia was settled by Europeans who brought slaves from Africa and set up a plantation economy. In the 18th century, Saint Lucia was at the center of the colonial struggles between the French and the British, changing hands 14 times before becoming a British Crown Colony in 1814 under the Treaty of Paris. Basseterre, St. Kitts. Although discovered by Columbus in 1493, the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis were settled by the British and French more than a century later. St. Kitts became known as the "mother colony of the West Indies," as British and French settlers sailed on from there to colonize many neighboring islands.
